Garrick Theatre Mural
Captain Kris has completed the first installation in a new exterior mural series at the historic Stockport Garrick Theatre, marking the beginning of a wider visual transformation of the building’s outer walls. Commissioned as part of an initiative to celebrate the theatre’s heritage while strengthening its presence within the town, the project blends storytelling, architecture, and community identity.
The mural, titled Behind the Curtain, presents a theatrical cross-section revealing the unseen world that supports a live performance. Illustrated in a cutaway style, the composition exposes interconnected spaces such as rehearsal rooms, workshops, costume areas, and dressing rooms, all arranged around a central performance scene. Structural elements including stairways and ladders visually connect each environment, reflecting the collaboration and coordination required to bring theatre to life.
To anchor the artwork within its local context, recognisable Stockport landmarks are incorporated as scenic backdrops and stage-like settings. This integration links the cultural legacy of the town with the imaginative world of performance, reinforcing the theatre’s role as both a historic institution and an active creative hub.
Founded in 1901, Stockport Garrick Theatre remains one of the region’s longstanding cultural venues. This mural series aims to revitalise its exterior, increase public engagement, and celebrate the craftsmanship behind theatre production through large-scale public art.
The project has been delivered with the support of Stockport Garrick Theatre and Totally Stockport, with further mural installations planned as the series continues.
